On the eve of Beryl’s centenary (!!), I’m happy to be sharing this homage of mine again, as Nicky’s Xmas season of SiNG with NiCKY kicked off at the Retro Bar last week! Still one of my proudest achievements, persuading Lesley to get that piano for the pub. Thank you Nicky, for bringing it to life 🌟⭐️🌟

It felt right to pay homage to Beryl this year.

Inspired by @beryl_cook_official Beryl Cook’s painting ‘Big Olives Little Olives’, this painting for SiNG with NiCKY at Retro features, Nicky Harris @nickyharris92 playing the piano at The Retro Bar @the_retro_bar, wearing his fabulous debut EP ensemble by Max Allen @maxallenbabes. Plus other characters, loosely inspired by friends and regulars.

Lesley mentioned, some time ago, that it would be lovely to have a piece with everyone singing around the piano, that really captures the feel of the night. When I remembered this painting of Beryl’s, it felt like a match made in heaven, and a fitting time to do it, shortly after the fantastic exhibition of Beryl Cook and @tomoffinlandfoundation Tom of Finland’s work at Studio Voltaire @studiovoltairelondon earlier this year.  

Thank you endlessly to Nicky Harris, who makes SiNG what it is and keeps it going so beautifully. Thank you to Lesley @lesleylush, for giving this a shot and letting me get us a piano for the pub (thanks again to Nicky for acquiring said piano, plus special mention to Nelson for orchestrating that delivery whilst I was in Devon).

Most importantly, thank you to everyone at Retro and everyone who comes along and sings! Hope to see you all this Christmas ❤️

Forgive me for how long it has taken me to post about this incredible book by wonderful Amin Ghaziani. ❤️💜🖤 ‘Long Live Queer Nightlife: How the Closing of Gay Bars Sparked a Revolution’ published by Princeton University Press, hit shelves earlier this year. @amin_ghaziani @princetonupress

Congratulations, Amin, on this fantastic publication. It’s so refreshing to see an academic explore areas of our community that are commonly less quantifiable. Plus, explore them with an important core value of FUN, joy and creative perseverance. It is heartening that this book exists in the world, I’m honoured to have been a part of it. Thank you.  When Amin first handed me the finished book, I couldn’t stop saying ‘this is so legit’, ‘look at how legit this is!’ 😅❤️ This really is a moment. It’s so unbelievably cool to have something ‘so legit’ out there alongside all the DIY, grass roots, indie art and writing. Thank you Amin for this book, congratulations on completing your fantastic book tour, and thank you Princeton, for believing in this work. 🥂  *For those reading this post on Lesley Mag @lesleymagazine, I first spoke with Amin about/for this book right at the very beginning of my journey founding the magazine. Many of the core values explored in this text are closely connected to the ideas that created Lesley. We made caterpillars! 🐛🥬🍎🍓

Yesterday I ran a half-term activity in the children’s library and we made catapillars inspired by Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar. I also pulled out some non-fiction books on bugs for us to be inspired by real life caterpillars! It was a lot of fun.

First slide are the caterpillars I made during the session. The rest of these fabulous creations were made by the children and their parents. One of my absolute favourites is on the last slide, and was described as a ‘daemon devil caterpillar holding a TV’ !! 👹🐛🐛🐛

The British Pub has long acted as a communal front room for local community. Short for Public House, the Pub, as we like to call it, is an essential space of comfort and belonging for many. Kat has worked at Retro Bar, Central London queer pub, for going on 10 years. In that time it has been her most consistent home and a central force in the architecture of her life and work. In this series of shows, broadcast live from Retro, Kat invites friends and family to share music and stories.

LX1: the orange of belief.

FX1: the sound belonging makes. A handful of butches, fem(me)s and queers nestle into themselves. They steady their drinks and adjust their microphones. Long, trailing, cables connect them to each other through a mixer fit for live radio.

LX2: light narrows to a cartoon spotlight.

FX2: tables hum with anticipation.

All around me/us people I/we love are becoming mothers, losing mothers, gaining mothers, mothering each other and being mothered. Sister-mothers, mother-friends, brother-mothers, other-mothers, lover-mothers. It doesn’t always look like what you think it should, but it’s there.

Image reads: Motherhood especially, though it often has a particularly binary and gendered definition, feels like an inherently collaborative act.
All around me/us people I/we love are becoming mothers, losing mothers, gaining mothers, mothering each other and being mothered. Sister-mothers, mother-friends, brother-mothers, other-mothers, lover-mothers. It doesn’t always look like what you think it should, but it’s there.

Daisy’s work has an honesty that echos, for me, the very origins of abstract art itself; a sisterly connection with psychological space, visceral movement and an attempt to describe depths of our reality that cannot be reached through words alone.

I cried and ordered a bunch of copies from the newsagent 😅😭 Thank you and congratulations endlessly and always to everyone involved in the show. It wouldn’t be here and receiving this kind of recognition without every individual’s invaluable contributions making it what it is. Huge thanks also to everyone who’s visited so far and talked about the exhibition, all this buzz is thanks to you! This feels like a very “bugs life” moment 😂🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜

‘On the evidence of what is on show, the Rebel Dykes were never grateful, never waiting for recognition, Kernick and Hudson have not engaged in a please-all strategy of curatorial hedging. It is an exhibition that speaks to the demographic it represents, ‘the centre of otherness’ (to quote African artist and writer Everlyn Nicodemus) that they inhabit, the history they share and the present it currently informs. And what a history it is.’

A-tonal self portrait, summer 2020, oil paint on paper▫️ I haven’t really been showing or posting much of my artwork, other than the odd collage, over the past couple of years.. I think mainly because I had a bit of a break from painting a couple years ago and since then most of my work has been very personal and very much in an intense state of transition. It’s starting to look very different I think from before. I’m still very much developing as an artist (I always will be!) and I’m not sure where my style will settle next but I’m becoming more comfortable with experimenting and more excited about where I’m headed with it. I’m not completely happy but I’m not sure that I ever will be. That said, I’m actually starting to find that feeling in itself exciting because it’s constantly pushing me to create new work. ▫️ “I’ve never been able to home in on one way of doing things .. for years it caused me a lot of anxiety, but I’m finally okay with it.” - Nicole Eisenman
